How Do You Measure A Maine Coon Cat?
Measuring your Maine Coon is important to ensure that they are growing at a healthy rate, especially during kittenhood.
Many owners choose to measure their Maine Coon once a month and record the following factors to keep a close eye on their Maine Coon kittens development:
- Weight
- Height
- Length
Maine Coons are easygoing, patient creatures, so they tend to do quite well during the measuring process.
However, it is a good idea to get your Maine Coon used to this process from a young age and provide plenty of treats and positive reinforcement to encourage them to stay still.
It may be tempting to measure your cat frequently, especially if you are excited to watch your kitten grow from a tiny baby into a huge Maine Coon cat!
However, measuring too frequently can result in confusing and inconsistent data, since their weight can fluctuate over smaller periods of time.
To avoid confusing data, you should measure your cat once a month, preferably during the same week of each month for the sake of consistency.
How To Measure Cats Weight
To measure your cat’s weight, use a baby scale or postage scale.
This is the easiest measurement to take, as you will not need your cat to stay still for very long.
How To Measure Cats Length
For length, measure from the tip of your cat’s nose to the base of its tail in a straight line.
This is generally easiest if your cat is lying down on the floor, but it can be taken while standing, as well.
How To Measure Cats Height
To measure height, make sure your cat is standing evenly on all four paws.
Then, measure from the top of your cat’s shoulder in a straight line down its front leg to the floor.
Maine Coon Kitten Vs Normal Kitten
When looking at a Maine Coon compared to normal cat, there are a lot of differences, especially among kittens.
At first, Maine Coon kittens may look just like any other kitten, since their distinctive coats have not grown in yet, and they also have not reached full size.
However, Maine Coon kittens are often much more playful than regular kittens, and they are also typically more intelligent.
Furthermore, Maine Coons usually retain this kittenlike playfulness throughout their whole lives, so they usually do not grow out of their playful nature the same way as regular cats.
Maine Coon kittens also grow much more slowly than most cats.
While the average cat reaches its full size after about a year to a year and a half, Maine Coons take three to five years to reach full size!
As a result, Maine Coon kittens need more calories than the average cat, and it is even more important to provide them with a diet that is rich in protein, with a moderate amount of fat and only a small amount of carbohydrates.
